Designers and design companies are often known to create self promotional pieces to either attract new clients or remind current clients of their abilities. These self promotional pieces are usually more than just simply image and type, instead being a physical product which in some cases could be classed as a subtle bribe to the client with the kind of things being offered.
One company who has taken this idea a step further is advertising and branding agency One Trick Pony who are based in New Jersey, USA. They have created their own annual alcohol themed holiday called ‘Alcoholidays’ with which they package and brand a different alcoholic product each year to send to clients. The main idea behind the concept is a celebration of both the clients and One Trick Pony’s work over the previous year, sort of as a thank you to them, which I feel is something which all self promotional pieces should do, as any client that is thanked by a company for working with them, is sure to work with them again.
The latest iteration of Alcoholidays featured bottles of tequila that were concealed within a hollowed out wooden log. Each bottle had a customised wooden label and came with a wooden shot glass, both of which had designs and instructions burnt into them.
The instructions on the label invited the client to log on to a special mobile website created for the product where members of One Trick Pony were depicted in images toasting to the holiday. Each client received a personal password for the site, which allowed them to create their own toast, thus giving them more on top of the bottle of tequilla gift. This ultimately further strengthens the company-client relationship as it makes them feel as though the agency has thought of them individually.
One of the best things about the product however, besides the personal feel and celebration gift theme, is the ingenious name of the tequila. Called YULE LOGIN, it links to both the fact that the piece has a Germanic wintery theme and the act of the client logging on to the website. This creates a clever play on words to describe what the client will do when they receive the product, as One Trick Pony say themselves; “you’ll read the instructions on the bottle’s label, then YULE LOGIN to our mobile site”.
One Trick Pony also created a series of short videos based around the product:
